Holistic Drum Lessons in Pascoe Vale

Hi, I’m Michael Matthys, a specialist drum teacher originally from Europe but now based in Melbourne.

After touring extensively in various types of bands and musical projects, I made my way to Melbourne to share my passion for drums and playing music.

I’m confident teaching all levels from beginner to advanced students and encourage people of all ages to get involved. I currently teach students ranging in age from 5 to over 50!

I always ensure the drum  lessons are customised to suit the students level and musical interests. Time will be spent developing goals and discovering musical tastes to make sure lessons are rewarding and engaging.

Holistic Teaching Philosophy

  • Foundational Skills: The drum lessons begin with a strong emphasis on building foundational skills. This includes mastering basic techniques such as grip, hand and foot coordination, limb independence, groove creation, and dynamic control. It ensures that students are well-rounded players capable of navigating various musical styles.
  • Improvisation: Holistic teaching encourages drummers to explore improvisation and express themselves freely on the drum kit. This fosters creativity and helps students develop their unique voice as musicians.
  • Composition and Arrangement: Students are often introduced to basic principles of composition and arrangement. This knowledge enables them to contribute meaningfully to musical projects and collaborate with other musicians.
  • Understanding Musical Phrasing: Students are encouraged to understand the musical context of their playing. This involves recognising patterns, identifying accents, and understanding how their drumming fits into the overall musical structure.
  • Physical Well-being: During the drum lessons we pay attention to the physical aspects of drumming, promoting proper posture and technique to prevent injuries. Drummers are taught to be aware of their body’s movements and to adopt ergonomic playing habits.
